This forgotten oddity poses a lot of questions, much food for thought. The possibilities are endless, but I don’t have a clue where to start. Perhaps you can help me figure out what I was missing, just 90 miles south of the MusicLine dialing area. Perhaps Townsman alexmagic will resurface. Is he now pissed at me too? (Who else is pissed at me now?)

I look forward to you insights—and admissions of anger.

  1. I don’t understand; there’s nothing available there that you can’t find easily on the Internet; I mean amazon has “bits from the hits”.

    btw, what’s “New York Telephone”?

Yeah, it’s hard to believe how stupid people were then. And download speeds were ridiculously slow in the late 70s.

I’m pissed at Mod too btw.

  4. Yeah, just imagine downloading Frampton Comes Alive at 300 baud.

It’s like a blog before there were blogs. A phone log. Phlog?

Wow, did they think that music would entice callers? it sounds like the same guys that did the music that used to play before movies while they advertised the theater chain.

It reminds me of a commercial for Clear Channel’s I Heart Radio app that I heard yesterday. One of the things that should make you excited to download I Heart Radio is that you can “become the music expert among your friends.”

Who the hell wants to be the music nerd? I laughed my ass off when I heard that. Why not just say, “You can bore your friends with music trivia, rock snobbery and even join a blog about music and talk to other people with friends and family that just tune out all this stuff about REM’s latest breakup and their subsequent Unfulfilled Rock Fashions.”

Son, if I was pissed at you, you better believe you’d know it, because I’d be going all end of days up in your business right now. I am curious, however, who actually is pissed at you, Mod, so recap please!

Re: MusicLine, does anybody locally (I’m assuming it was just local) remember the Donnelly Directory in the late ’80s/early ’90s? They had special-dial numbers that were kind of like something between this and a proto-Moviephone deal, where you could get “news” about the movies and TV. Can’t remember if there was a music element.

But I would have all the respect in the world if someone were to restart Music Line, using the same exact ad, today just for the comedy potential. The idea of a “phlog” kinda kills me in general, it seems like a Scharpling & Wurster bit that hasn’t been created yet.

  8. This is good to know, alexmagic. There are a few Townspeople beside BigSteve who are pissed at me – I’m pretty sure they are, that is. I don’t want to name any more names, though, in case I’m wrong and THEN they get pissed at me.

I do remember those Donnelly Directory numbers! I never called one, though.

Yes, the phlog needs to be launched!

Ha! Can a person get a free phone number using Google voice or something? Maybe you can use the RTH google login for that.

it’s retro enough that it could be really… awesome.
