Next week, Mr. Royale and I will be traveling to Portland, Oregon. I don’t know much about the city other than every single person I have ever talked to about it has said that we would love it. I associate it with the IFC show, Portlandia, food, the films of Gus Van Sant, rain, roses, Powell’s Books, more food, and a problematic art gallery (a separate story of getting friends of friends to hijack several pieces of Mr. Royale’s art from a non-paying gallery owner who just wouldn’t/couldn’t return them).
But you, RTH’s cultured readers, have certainly traveled to Portland before. Or if not, you most likely have knowledge of the city’s music scene. Mr. Royale and I will be there three days, and in between our eating and drinking, we hope to discover more about Portland’s music life. I ask you, please help us devise a tour of noted Portland rock and roll sites.
Voodoo Donuts!
Mmmm, Mmmm.
We recently played here:

Decent venue. There is a lively scene in the surrounding area including a record shop and many eateries.
Thanks, man. I’m a sucker for a record store.
I’m guessing by the minimal responses that 1. this is not an interesting post and/or 2. that not many people have suggestions about Portland.
It’s funny – Big Sister Seattle has so much rock history and the Pacific North West has inspired many musicians. But maybe everyone is too full from all those food trucks in Portland to play much music? I’m not finding much about history or music sites in the area.
Sorry, LMK. I could offer an opinion on Portland, Maine, but I’ve never been to Oregon.
I’ve got family in Portland and have visited a couple of times in the last few years, but have no knowledge of the music scene. On other subjects… Japanese Garden is a great place, just up the hill from the Rose Gardens. A McMenamins pub is a good casual place for microbrews & burgers.
Yup, we’re more familiar with the Maine Portland, too. You’d think after living on the west coast since 2004 that we would know something about the area…
Maybe we’ll have to start Rock and Roll History at the places you mentioned. Backstage and Mod, do we have a patented RTH sticker that we can leave up places, sort of like the old Andre the Giant dohickees?
Trigmo, Mr. Royale once made a sticker that read “Voice activated – please speak command loudly” and put it up in the Sutter-Stockton garage elevator.
That is awesome. I don’t think it would be apropros on the Japanese Pavilion. 🙂
