Supergrass announced their breakup today. As a memorial, please enjoy the above video, which never fails to cheer me up. I really enjoyed their stuff. Early on, they sounded like the Buzzcocks. Later on, they sounded like T.Rex and Bowie.

To be honest, though, their most recent album, Diamond Hoo Ha (2008), was easily my least favorite. Maybe this is mean, but I’m kinda relieved they’re breaking up, because I couldn’t really see myself buying any more of their albums. To put it a nicer way, they’re getting out just in time. Any other artists you feel that way about, glad they’re splitting because you can feel their inspiration waning?

Yeah, I knew something was up when I stumbled upon a new all-covers band, the Hot Rats feat. two members of Supergrass. It’s actually a decent little album.

As for Supergrass, their first three releases are some of the best stuff to come out of the ’90’s. Check ’em out if you haven’t already.

  2. Hey, my brother likes Supergrass. I never got into them but I don’t begrudge them their fans or success. This track is a little too Stones-y for me.

I know this goes against the entire point of this post, but I’m quite curious about bands that *aren’t* breaking up. Who is (or should be, natch) this generation’s ZZ Top, the band that stays together in their original lineup for 40 years?

U2 is headed for a “’til death do us part” career. Those guys seem to love playing together.
