In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator takes a break from the start of the NHL playoff season to bring you a mostly upbeat episode, despite his continuing frustration with some documentary on the unmaking of The Beach BoysSmile.

I can see the comments on Mr. Mod’s report cards at school – “Does not play well with others. Tends to be a poor loser at games.” I was the one who brought up Pacific Ocean Blue and Brian’s “one-finger synthesizer” Beach Boys album. Why didn’t you just come out and say “tonyola is a clueless twit when it comes to music.”? At least that would have been admirably direct.

Nice to hear some Roy Wood and Move. As far as I’m concerned, Wood was one of the unsung mad geniuses of rock. I’m sure Mr. Mod hates him with a vengeance. I’m blasting Wizzard as I type.

  2. Thanks for listening, tonyola. I trust you did not lose your sense of humor in doing so. I know stuff can get lost in these means of communicating, but I truly hold no animosity toward you and all the rest of you who stuck up for those Beach Boys albums. I don’t even think you’re a clueless twit because we have some differences in opinion, can you dig it? This stuff’s all in good fun, and the day the joke’s not on me as well is the day I should give it up.

Nah, I’m just giving your nose a hard tweak. Your punishment is to watch this bit of Roy Wood lunacy in its entirety. No cheating by stopping early, now.

  4. Glad to know that you were joking too. I have “called out” people more directly than I did you and your fellow Smile-lovers, but I try to do so knowing that I’m an idiot for fussing over such things.

BTW, I think Wizzard blows, but I’m a big fan of The Move and Roy Wood’s Boulders. Some of the other Roy Wood solo albums have their moments too, including that ’50s-style thing he did, but Wizzard always sounds like mush to my ears.

  5. I have to agree that the first Wizzard album, Wizzard Brew, is pretty tough going – a noisy, overcompressed mess filled with clattering drums and buzzing saxes and cellos. The second Wizzard album, Eddie & The Falcons, was the ’50s thing, and some singles like the one in the video I linked are Phil Spector homages. Wood also did a fun single called “Forever” where he switches between early Beach Boys and Neil Sedaka. He sang all the parts on the record.

  6. That Move songs explains a whole lot about Mr. Mod’s band Autumn Carousel.

  7. Oh, and thanks (I think) for playing my very first recording done in GarageBand several years ago. I think I got pretty close to that Martha and the Muffins vibe I’ve always been going for.

  8. Fingeroff and I spent a great deal of time examining that song!

  9. Those Bedroom Recordings of yours are a fine collection!
