This show spoke to me. In the context of the other songs, it was the first time an Autumn Carousel track didn’t make me feel like I was a square. I think I understood, if not for the sake of the song, but for the sake of my own peace of mind.
I may have mentioned before that I actually saw Sky Pilot era Animals play live. I was only 15 or so, but I was already getting psychedelicized.
Just got back from my night out with the Royales. As groovy in real life as you might imagine, maybe moreso. Mr. Royale keeps a pair of boxing gloves in the back seat of their car. A peace sign is stamped on the gloves’ left knuckles a dove across the right.
I must commend you on the cover of Randy Newman’s “Have You Seen My Baby.”

Yes, indeed, it served the important function of washing the bad taste of that crappy Dead track out of my mouth; a bad taste only to be exacerbated by the even crappier Airplane cut. San Francisco: a great city with much to answer for, rock-wise. I have previously commented on Mod’s inexplicable affection for Burdon & Animals 2.0, who have a few solid songs and a tremendous amount of pretentious twaddle.
Interesting. Does San Francisco have the highest profile music scene with the least amount of good material? Is there another city with as big a gap between the quality of the music and the fame of the scene? Seattle? Manchester?
I have to admit to not liking much about this week’s selections. That summer of love stuff leaves me loveless. But thank goodness he didn’t include another SF native band: Pablo Cruise.
There is some very good stuff coming out of SF now – I particularly like Moon Duo, a psychedelic garage band, and off-shoot of Wood Shjips.
Oh no. Wooden Shjips took the brown acid. Not good.
