  1. Mr. Moderator

Right now I’m listening to a song called “Harness and Wheel” from the new Kingsbury Manx album. It’s very much in the vein of Something Else and …Village Green…, and it’s quite good at sounding like this stuff while also having some substance of its own.

Here’s the shocking backstory, at least for those who know me: I downloaded this song as a bonus for purchasing and legally downloading the new Sloan album through Yep Roc. I’ve never purchased and legally downloaded a single song let alone an entire 30-song album before. I’m still tingling from this 21st century experience.

Now the Sloan album is playing. More on that later.

Pretty People- The Anderson Council. Seriously, played on Underground Garage. Pretty cool!

god, you slugs are boring. Elvis Costello? Can you BE anymore….RockTownHall ca. 2003???? Hell-OHHH?!? Is THIS the future of RTH? Timid little comments about “RTH-safe” selections? Sheesh.

I am currently listening to the first album by Silver Sunshine. Has anyone heard it? I know they have another one out, but I don’t have it yet.

Mr. Moderator, this album is provoking some thoughts on the future direction of psychedelia, ones which I’d like to explore in the form of a blog topic.

“I’ll contact you off site (and off list),” he said, conspiratorially….saturnismine

Before I comment, this is not the forum for poking fun at anyone’s listening tastes…OK it is, but Citizen Mom couldn’t have picked a better selection to kiss up to Mr. Moderator than she did. Give the woman credit for the wisdom of this opening move. One day I envision her posting on the merits of an artist I can’t stand, and then I’ll be faced with the prospect of ruining a good thing.

Anyhow, I look forward to your sending that secret signal to indicate material ready for posting on the front page. Bring it on, and thanks.

mr. moderator, as usual, you make lemonade out of my bull-in-chinashop approach. and citizen mom, forgive me for my rampage, please. ‘this year’s model’ is, without question, one of declan’s finest fruits. and i mistook you for one of the many among the rth legions who have already juiced that choice plum for all it’s worth.

mod, over the weekend, or perhaps early next week, we’ll confer…

Nyyyaugh! I am honored and, at the same time, filled with shame. I had long since forgotten this dingleberry. The good news that it’s better than I remembered it. The bad news is: that’s not saying very much!

  9. Saturnismine,

No prob, no worries. Besides, I’ve been here like three seconds so I’m not about to start telling people to suck my ballz — until you know me a little better. And then it’ll be for a good reason.
But you’ll see quickly enough that there is nothing timid about me. CM

Right on. Welcome to The Hall CM!

  11. Social Distortion — “1945”

    Sadly, because of this:

PLACENTIA, California (AP) — Brent Liles, a former bassist for the 1980s punk rock group Social Distortion, was struck and killed by a truck while riding a bicycle, authorities said Wednesday. He was 43.

Liles was hit on January 18. No immediate charges were brought against the driver.

Liles, who was from Fullerton, joined Social Distortion in 1981 and played bass on the band’s “Mommy’s Little Monster” recording two years later.

Fed up with turmoil inside the group, he and drummer Derek O’Brien quit the band during a New Year’s Eve performance in 1983.

Liles went on to play with other punk groups such as Agent Orange.

    This

It’s very much in the vein of Something Else and …Village Green

has me intrigued. I can download any/all of Kingsbury Manx on eMusic. Someone tell me what to do?!

  13. Thee Headcoats-Headcoats Down!

I just picked this up off of emusic this week, and this little garage nugget is killing me. Raw and grungy, lo fi as crap, but the tunes man, the tunes are where it’s at.

This is my first Billy Childish lp, and I guess I only have about 300 more to track down. Sounds familiar…

  14. Mr Mod, I simply must hear more on your take on this Sloan lp.

It’s not sticking with me at all.

I think it’s the imaginary smirks I can see on their faces as they’re playing this stuff.

So far, I know what you mean. I need to chew on it a little longer. Hold tight, if at all possible.

Has anyone else been spinning this album yet?

  16. sammymaudlin

I gave up on them after Action Pact. As much as I enjoy most everything before that, I couldn’t agree with kpdexter more regarding the smirk. I wanna hear more about these Kingsbury Manx guys.

  17. Perhaps it’s my status as the resident Canadiana Fanboy that’s making me the Sloan apologist, but…where are these smirks of which you speak? If anything, I find this album (which I’m only listening to for the first time right now — screw you all, I’ve been busy) a lot less smirky than their material from five or six years ago when they were in their full-on ’70s FM rawk phase.

Do you mean stuff like the quote from the bridge of “Jet” on the keyboards at the end of “I’ve Gotta Try”? That strikes me as more clever than smirky…

  18. sammymaudlin

    Its the

    full-on ’70s FM rawk phase

smirk to which I speak. Its this phase that I enjoy more than the recent. When the smirk subsided on Action Pact, I missed it. Kinda like Apples In Stereo. They have a “trick” and I’m a sucker for it but its a “trick” nonetheless.

In the few chances I’ve had to hear this so far, it may be their best album since Navy Blues. What I like best is that it’s got a few more ’60s/early ’70s Harrison-type songs; the Rawk stuff is often catchy. What I’m not thrilled about is their general lack of personality and emotion. They too often sound like guys who are playing tennis rackets in front of a mirror.

I’ll say one thing: this 30-song album would make a great ep!

  20. “Its this phase that I enjoy more than the recent. When the smirk subsided on Action Pact, I missed it.”

Okay, I’m confused now. So you agree with me that this album is less smirky than the stuff from a few albums back, only in your case, you don’t consider that an improvement. Right?

  21. sammymaudlin

Yes. I actually like the sound when they smirk but don’t like that they are smirking while they’re making that sound. Something like great sex with a call girl.
