Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

Consider your generation for a moment. It’s likely that you look back at the last few generations that came before you with a certain envy or admiration. Those past generation will likely remind you that times were better then without mentioning any of the negatives of their times. When you think of your generation you might be convinced that you improved upon the faults of the previous generation, especially when it comes to social issues. Of course, you distance yourself from the poor fashion sense and pop music of the times and heap a lot the blame on the “establishment” or the “mainstream.” Finally, the generations that came after you clearly doesn’t have a clue especially when it comes to music and film. They also have zero appreciation for your generation’s efforts on making this world a better place. When will they ever learn?

It’s a perpetual cycle, I guess.

  1. Another good set! I sort of found myself doing a little dance to the Prince NPG!

And I found myself recalling aerobics routines to that James Brown!

Generations – other than The Who, the first song Mr. Royale and I thought of and started to sing, “This generation rules the nation…”

Yeah, the James Brown song is tolerable disco until the chorus. Once the background singers and strings kick in the song becomes very lame It reminds me a lot like “Boogie Wonderland” and not in a good way.
I was 8-10 years old during the heyday of disco so I don’t have the absolute revulsion for the genre. When I was a kid I thought it was just another genre of music and didn’t understand how much of a threat it posed to rock and roll. I do recall vividly the Disco Demolition Night. It was breaking news on the local Detroit tv stations because the Tigers were playing that night in Chicago.

  4. I kept waiting for Generation X’s “Your Generation,” a song I always like but just as readily feel guilty about liking because the lyrics sound so forced. I forgot about Patti Smith’s “My Generation” cover. I remember hearing her do that on a King Biscuit Flour Hour broadcast when I was a kid and thinking it was really cool. These days, not quite as cool – but still cool to revisit!

That Gen X song leads off next week’s Part 2 episode.
