I’ve always been into theme shows. I wrestled with many convoluted ideas and settled on a tribute to my favorite night of the week. And it’s partly for selfish reasons as well. I look forward to listening to SNSI during my Sunday morning runs or in some cases a late Saturday night run. Certainly, I’m more than capable of coming up with a playlist.
So, it’s a zippy 30 minutes long. It’s my first experience putting something like this together. So, consider this dipping my toes in the water.
Obviously, I left out the Bay City Rollers song. That’s an easy one. So how about Saturday Night Holocaust by The Dead Kennedys which I came very close to playing only to get to 33 1/3 minutes. Also, the word “night” isn’t mandatory for Last Man Standing.
On the heels of your comment I propose….”Another Rainy Saturday” by My Bloody Valentine!
Great show, cliff! I hadn’t heard that Yo La Tengo song before; thanks for the introduction. And you’re right, that Pains of Being Pure At Heart did sound like a MBV rip off (mixed with some Sarah Records vocals), but I still sort of liked it.
As for a Saturday song, in the spirit of the 80’s, I’ll give you The Specials’ “Friday Night, Saturday Morning.”
Another obvious one is Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting. I’ve always hated that one. I don’t hate Elton John. I’m sure if I was a teen in the early 70’s he would mean as much to me as some those 80’s songs from that last thread.
I was thrilled to hear “When Saturday Comes,” one of my favorite Undertones songs! I’ve got to go back and listen to the whole show to list what Saturday songs you played, then I will gladly add songs to the LMS list.
I like theme shows too.
Another one for this show could have been “Saturday Night Special” by Lynyrd Skynrd
De La Soul – “A Rollerskating Jam named Saturday”
Yes!
Here’s the playlist from Cliff’s show, so we can build a Last Man Standing of Saturday Songs atop what was played and what’s been listed so far:
Georgia Satellites, “Almost Saturday Night”
13 Engines, “King of Saturday Night”
The Easybeats, “Saturday Night”
David Bowie, “Driving Saturday”
The Undertones, “When Saturday Comes”
The Rain Parade, “Saturday’s Asylum”
Yo La Tengo, “Saturday”
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, “Come Saturday”
This was a strong mix, cliff. I really liked the Rain Parade song. That’s a band friends have tried to turn me onto dating back to the mid-’80s, but I never liked that Quercio’s voice. In a single shot, coming out of one of my favorite Undertones songs, I had no problems. Maybe I’ll revisit that band with more luck next time. The next 2 songs, which I also didn’t know, were good too, although I may own that Yo La Tengo album. (I don’t remember a whole lot of their songs from the couple of albums I own.)
May our Saturday songs flow on!
The Jam, “Saturday’s Kids”
LMS!
“The Heart of Saturday Night” – Jonathan Richman
If you want to do some deep investigation into Rain Parade, also check out David Roback’s next groups Rainy Day, Opal, and Mazzy Star — though I’m betting you’re one of those people who can’t stand Hope Sandoval’s voice.
I can see not liking Mazzy Star, but I wouldn’t expect it to be because of her voice.
“Saturday Night” – Schoolly D
“Saturday Afternoon”-Green
All right, someone has to take the plunge here, so let it be said: “Saturday In the Park” – Chicago
I remember having no objection to her voice, but if memory serves a lot of those songs were really slow. Is Opal the band that came out on Eno’s label? That album was especially…subtle.
Mister, you’re a better man than I! Thank you for taking that hit on our behalf.
After the whole 80’s revisited post I thought for sure you would hate The Rain Parade song, mainly for the vocals. I like the build up to the VU rip off ending.
“Saturday Night is Dead” Graham Parker + (friend of the Hall) the Rumour.
“One More Saturday Night” – Grateful Dead
“Saturday” – Josh Rouse
This song was pulled at the last minute fearing a serious ass ripping from the BAC.
“Saturday Night Fish Fry” – Louis Jordan
