In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator reviews some of the underrated strengths of The Attractions and The JBs, our finalists in our long-running tournament to determine—once and for all—rock’s greatest backing band. He also spins some new purchases and wonders what it is that he likes when he likes jazz. Enjoy.

Thanks for the Go-Betweens.
I’m with you on the jazz question: I’m not sure what I like until I hear it. And I’d like to know more, but also feel that it would take a big chunk of time to get to know even some basics. I guess I’m lazy or there just isn’t enough time but I’m still trying to find my way through “rock” music. Could someone make me a labeled collection with examples of some of the different styles so that at least I can be part of a basic jazz conversation? Or point me in the direction of a good starter offering?
The Go-Betweens: funny, I have no memory of them, but that track sounded like a blend of Out of Time-era REM and the Smiths. And, dear God, no, I don’t meant that in a good way.
The thing about jazz is: for those of us, which I suppose is all of us, who grew up with rock, we know rock and our associations are with rock. So, as someone coming to jazz a little later in life, it has taken me 20-25 years of listening to form critical opinions and a whole other set of associations. The other thing is that, for the most part, there is so much more going on in jazz recordings than in most rock that it is hard to articulate (at least for me, a non-musician) what it is that I like in, say, Horace Silver doing “Senor Blues” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8jFGFwOm7k&feature=related), but damn, I like it an awful lot.
