Prove it all night!

In a recent thread Townsman bostonhistorian referred to Bruce Springsteen as the “Golden Retriever of rock…Eager to please, tireless, good looking, and dumb as a post.” This is a keen observation. We may learn more about our rock legends by seeing them through the lens of the canine world. What breed of dog would you assign to the following artists, and why?

  • Bob Dylan
  • Paul McCartney
  • John Lennon
  • Patti Smith
  • Robert Smith
  • Bono
  • Paul Weller
  • Rick Buckler
  • Billy Gibbons
  • Prince
  • Jeff Lynne
  • Seger

Any other rockers as breeds of dog come to mind?

Lennon’s john.

Using the introductory phrase “Speaking of…” see if we can’t build a chain of tangentially related rock thoughts.

I’ll start this exercise with the following: “Speaking of the Bealtes, did you see that a toilet used by John Lennon was auctioned off for nearly $15,000?”

The first person who posts to this “speaking of…” should build, tangentially, off John Lennon, rock ‘n roll toilets, auctions, or any other tangentially related subject – just not the original subject that we assume had been spoken of, “The Beatles.”

Got that? The following person posting would then build off the previous “speaking of…”

As I was saying, Speaking of the Bealtes, did you see that a toilet used by John Lennon was auctioned off for nearly $15,000?

The year we met in college, sammymaudlin and I developed a drinking game around the mildy popular tv show T.J. Hooker. I assume most of you have played a drinking game based around a tv show at one time or another. There are certain cues based around expectations in plot and character devices that require participants to drink. Newhart, I believe, was a popular game when we were in college, but we felt we were too cool to swig whenever a character on the show said “Bob.” Our game, “Hooker,” did involve swigging down beer or whatever whenever a character addressed the former James Tiberius Kirk, but it had other cues for drinking, such as the obligatory T.J. Hooker lecture to an apprehended bad guy, man-girdle and toupee shots of Shatner, the absence of a rear-view mirror in any cop car, key appearances by young Heather Locklear, any scene featuring the “Boy Romeo” charms of Adrian Zmed, and – most exciting of all – any number of perceived references to Star Trek! A character touching the shoulder of another character, for instance, was a clear reference to Spock’s Vulcan nerve pinch. Hooker closing in with Kirk-like moves on a woman in need was another reason to swig.

While I was washing my car today, AC/DC came on the radio. This was the Bon Scott-era AC/DC, not the Brian Johnson version, which I consider to be superior. Anyway, it occurred to me that Bon Scott is the answer to a burning Rock and Roll Question: “What would it sound like if Bob Dylan fronted a hard-rock band?”

Since most of us are approaching the age where curling up with Trebek is going to be a dominant form of entertainment, this format shouldn’t be too hard to get: 1) Set us up with the answer to the Question, 2) then fill us in on the answer when the suspense is killing us.

Here’s another example:

A: The Goo Goo Dolls.
Q: What would the Replacements sound like if they kinda sucked and got really famous?

And yet another:

A: The Brian Johnson-led AC/DC
Q: What would it sound like if Marge Simpson sang lead in a hard-rock band?

You get the format; this is Rock and Roll Jeopardy. We’ll open the board, but first let’s meet our contestants. First, we have this nerdy guy from Philadelphia who once got stuck in an elevator…
