Let’s review the ground rules here. The Mystery Date song is not necessarily something I believe to be good. So feel free to rip it or praise it. Makes me no never mind. Rather the song is something of interest due to the artist, influences, time period… Your job is to decipher as much as you can about the artist without research. Who do you think it is? Or, Who do you think it sounds like? When do you think it was recorded? Etc…

If you know who it is, don’t spoil it for the rest. Anyone who knows it can play the “mockcarr option.” (And I’ve got a hunch that there are a lot who know this one.) This option is for those of you who just can’t hold your tongue and must let everyone know just how in-the-know you are by calling it. So if you know who it is and want everyone else to know that you know, email The Back Office at thebackoffice[at]rocktownhall.com. If correct we will post how brilliant you are in the Comments section.

The real test of strength though is to guess as close as possible without knowing. Ready, steady, go!

If you know who it is, don’t spoil it for the rest. We have a new component called the “mockcarr option.” This option is for those of you who just can’t hold your tongue and must let everyone know just how in-the-know you are by calling it. Take a listen to the track. If you know who it is, please refrain from posting. If you don’t know who it is, tell us what you think. Like it? Hate it? Why? Who does it sound like? Give a guess as to who it might be.

Greetings,

Today’s Mystery Date will work a bit differently than how we’ve conducted these in the past. Rather than post an “unmarked” mp3 for you to identify, I’m posting a screen capture from a video. Excluding Townsman E. Pluribus Gergely, who chose this frame for analysis in our recent long night’s work, the first Townsperson who can identify the video from which this screen capture appears will not only win an actual musically relevant PRIZE but, more importantly, can claim the top rock nerd honors on our most recent Last Man Standing, on bands that have employed two drummmers.

Are you ready for our Mystery Date? For those who feel they can handle the full weight of what’s to follow…

Maria/Somewhere

I found this show tune track on the B-side of a Thrifty Music single from a Mystery Date-caliber artist, and was so impressed I tracked down the album in CD form. It’s not consistently good, but I’m glad I own it. So: this is both my entry into the Show Tune Hall Last Man Standing battle, and my Mystery Date challenge to you all. Who is this guy? For extra credit, tell me who produced the tune. Hint: he shows up in the RTH menu bar with some frequency.

I look forward to your responses.

These guys were an early 70s Canadian band, Hamilton to be exact, heavily influenced by Syd’s Pink Floyd, The Stooges and The Velvet Underground. Formed in 1972, the first six tracks on the belated album, Cyborgs Revisited, were recorded in 1974 by Bob and Daniel Lanois (fellow Hamiltonians) in their mother’s basement. The sessions were aborted when funds ran out.
