Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes.

Can you believe it’s been a year of weekly Saturday Night Shut-In podcasts? Well, it has. This week Mr. Moderator and special guests bring you a very special broadcast coming at you LIVE from Urges in Atlantic City. He’ll share a rare, recently acquired slab of Thrifty Music and be joined by special guests Billy Bob Thornton, who’s written a fun, little ditty especially to commemorate our anniversary, and Andy Rooney.* He’ll end tonight’s episode with all the News From Rock Town Hall.

Saturday Night Shut-In is the Hall’s attempt at creating a virtual listening party. We talk a lot about music, but how often do we get to listen to it anymore—together? To date Townsman Hrrundivbakshi has manned the board for a few Thrifty Music editions, and next week promises a very special episode curated by the Royales, ladymiss and Mr. with a playlist hand selected by Friend of the Hall Simon Reynolds. I know the Web is loaded with high-tech virtual playlists tapped into Facebook, Twitter, and whatnot, but I continue to invite Townspeople to put together their own SNSI episode to share here in the Hall.

Thanks to all who contributed to this week’s anniversary episode and to those of you who have contributed to shows in our first year. You’ll probably want to share tonight’s episode with the family, maybe even invite a few neighbors over while you’re at it. Enjoy.

*NOTE: It’s unlikely Mr. Rooney will be able to join us tonight.

Say When

I recently saw this clip from Billy Connelly’s tour of Route 66, in which he stops by a guitar collector’s house. The guys had 50 Fender Coronados and 3 rooms filled with pedal steels and lap steels. (Oddly, I don’t recall seeing Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, etc. Perhaps he only had the budget for the second-tier collectables?)

On the one hand, I understand this to a degree because I can look at guitars all day. On the other hand, the only thing that really separates this guy from someone on one of those hoarders shows is resale value.

So when does enthusiasm cross over into OCD territory? Personally, I have 6 electric guitars, but they are all different styles and makes. And even though I have somewhere around 1000 cds and about 500 albums, I’ve never felt the need to have the entire catalog of any artist except in cases where they’ve only released a small amount of recordings.

Maybe this is all just a justification on my part (and maybe if I hit the lottery I’d ratchet things up a few notches) but right now, I feel like I’m still on the healthy side of my obsession.

I know some of you have massive collections of music (I’m thinking of a Sinatra-loving Townsman in particular), and I’m guessing that there are some folks on here who have impressive arsenals of guitars.

So how much is too much? And how close are you to crossing the line? (The guy in the clip says that he’s built additions to his house to accommodate his collection.)

In this week’s Mischief Night Eve edition of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator brings ROCKTOBER to a sobering crash, as he contemplates what’s really scary. It’s actually pretty simple. Some bone-chilling tunes will be broadcast, but probably not the kind you want to hear during this fun holiday time!

In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator broadcasts “LIVE” from the Coast of Loving, “Frisco,” as the natives call it, specifically! The Moderator is calling all Peace Warriors to tune in, turn on, and drop whatever it is you were doing. As an added bonus, for those curious to learn more about Eric Burdon & The (Then-)New Animals, you’ve come to the right episode.

Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator needs to keep his mouth shut. Sorry, kids, but this week’s episode is a music-only editon as your host gives his usual ROCKTOBER nasal drip a rest. It was a cool week in the Hall, featuring an interview with critic Simon Reynolds, the pros and cons of Nick Lowe’s latest album, rock’s most over-the-top box sets, an ongoing Last Man Standing that cannot be described without the use of adjectives, and the Internet’s first-ever discussion of rockers we’d most entrust to grill a steak. I’d love to discuss this and other recent happenings with you tonight, but trust me, I’m nothing without my dulcet tones. Instead, enjoy this mix of everything from Simply Saucer to Sleater-Kinney t0 Jon Hassell to Moondog to The Lovin’ Spoonful to Beulah to Charles Mingus. I promise to have my voice back in working order next week, when I broadcast episode 50 “LIVE” from San Franciso!

In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator works out his feelings over an aprupt end to his baseball fantasy life, as his beloved Philadelphia Phillies are knocked out of the first round of the playoffs. As part of the healing process, he feels the pain of New York Yankees fans, Boston Red Sox fans, and even San Francisco Giants fans. Can there be more to ROCKTOBER than the march to the World Series? Will Phillies fans ever get their taste of the “Dynasty Sampler?” We urge all baseball fans looking ahead to next year to join us in this special early edition of our weekly podcast.
