Rock Town Hall’s playoff series to determine—once and for all—the best song on the original Nuggets compilation moves onto the determination of the Best Song on Side 2. Once again, review the songs on Side 2, then make your choice. As always, you are encouraged to state your choice for BEST SONG on Side 2 in the Comments section (you must be registered to add comments, if you’re not already registered, please do so: the more chatter the merrier) and place your vote in the poll associated with this thread. The winner of this album side will move onto a playoff against the eventual winner of Side 3. (As with the poll to determine the BEST SONG on Side 2, you may still vote on the Best Song on Side 1 through Friday, August 19.)

Rock Town Hall’s playoff series to determine—once and for all—the best song on the original Nuggets compilation begins with a determination of the Best Song on Side 1. This part of the process is surprisingly simple, provided you can handle the turmoil that may come with selection a BEST SONG from each of the original Nuggets‘ 4 albums sides. I, for one, will experience tremendous turmoil over my choice for Side 1’s BEST SONG. What a killer top 5–seeded songs, if you ask me!

Before you place your vote and/or you lobby on behalf of a particular song, please take some time to review each of the songs in this division. Then, you are encouraged to state your choice for BEST SONG on Side 1 in the Comments section (you must be registered to add comments, if you’re not already registered, please do so: the more chatter the merrier) and place your vote in the poll associated with this thread. The winner of this album side will move onto a playoff against the eventual winner of Side 4. One day at a time, my friends, one day at a time…

What is the BEST SONG on Side 1 of the original Nuggets LP?

  • The Electric Prunes, "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night" (35%, 13 Votes)
  • The Standells, "Dirty Water" (24%, 9 Votes)
  • The Knickerbockers, "Lies" (24%, 9 Votes)
  • The Strangeloves, "Night Time" (14%, 5 Votes)
  • Mouse, "A Public Execution" (3%, 1 Votes)
  • The Vagrants, "Respect" (0%, 0 Votes)

What’s the Best Song on the Original Nuggets LP?

That’s the question members of popular rock music discussion blog Rock Town Hall are set to tackle. Rather than simply providing an opportunity to simply cast votes for a favorite song, with or without explanation, the Hall has been sanctioned by the International Rockolympic Committee to conduct a week-long playoff series, beginning on Wednesday, August 17. Initial details follow. Please hold your votes, but feel free to add analyses of the divisional match-ups and other related comments as we anticipate the start of this historic showdown!

Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In your host, Mr. Moderator, celebrates the downloading of a track by The Groundhogs that lives up to blooz-rock majesty of a long-lost cassette collection of Groundhogs songs gifted to a young, impressionable Mr. Moderator by a long-lost friend. Yet another search through a big box of ancient cassette tapes that bugs Mrs. Moderator to no end is about to ensue. This discovery, by the way, fits in nicely with the Mod’s recently rekindled ape sympathies, but a chatty ape tonight’s host is.

Townspeeps,

I need to cancel this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In as I drive back from a quick trip to Pittsburgh, where I will get my first look at the Pirates’ supposedly awesome PNC Park and, hopefully, meet one of my childhood idols, Manny Sanguillen, at “his” barbeque stand in the park. To make up for this huge hole in your Saturday night festivities I bring you a Very Special Edition of Dugout Chatter, in which I post songs for your listening pleasure, of course, but more so for your gut comments on the tunes and the associated question I pose regarding each track. Here goes!

For those of you on the “Krappa” side of the divide, does the following make you feel better or worse about Frank Zappa?

[audio:https://www.rocktownhall.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Ruben-And-The-Jets_01_If-I-Could-Only-Be-Your-Love-Again.mp3|titles=Ruben And The Jets, “If I Could Only Be Your Love Again”]

I think I’m almost always disappointed by albums produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry. He strikes me as a more sham than shaman. The few tracks I have from an album by The Congos that he produced, however, are solid. Is this stuff and Junior Murvin‘s “Police and Thieves” the best I’ll ever hear from Perry (excluding The Clash‘s majestic “Complete Control,” that is, for which he probably did little more than roll joints and let engineer Bill Price produce)?

[audio:https://www.rocktownhall.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/The-Congos_01_01_Fisherman.mp3|titles=The Congos, “Fisherman”]

Is this the last great song by David Bowie? I didn’t appreciate it in its time. Now I love it to the point that it might creep into my Top 5 Bowie Songs. Now that I think of it, what are your 5 favorite Bowie songs?

[audio:https://www.rocktownhall.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/David-Bowie_04_Ashes-To-Ashes-1999-Digital-Remaster.mp3|titles=David Bowie, “Ashes To Ashes”]

Has Lou Reed ever sounded more the way he was meant to sound?

[audio:https://www.rocktownhall.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Various-Artists_17_Peggy-Sue1.mp3|titles=Lou Reed, “Peggy Sue”]

I look forward to your comments.

In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In your host, Mr. Moderator, gives his vocal cords a rest. Yes, it was one of those weeks that required countless teleconferences, the hounding of lagging vendors, and other fun stuff at the office. We’ll let the music do the talking. A playlist will be made available after you have a chance to listen without prejudice.

In a rare, reflective moment, the white suits over at RockTownHall Labs were recently gazing bleary-eyed at the various records and cds contained in the climate-controlled vault when, in an even more rare moment of sudden group awareness, and without the aid of the RTH topic generator, it occurred to several of us that we own records we haven’t listened to in years, records we can’t seem to get rid of.

Was this (anal) retention the result of some childhood trauma? A clinging to nostalgia for our 17–23 musical coming-of-age demographic frollic in the rock ‘n’ roll sun, after which our musical tastes ossified along with the bones in our lower spine (males only)? A passive form of denial, or at least an unwillingness to deal with the clutter, physical and emotional, of our present and past, respectively? Are we really ever going to play that third Psychedelic Furs record ever again? The CCR Best of record? Hasn’t culture blunted our need to spin those songs ever again in our own homes? And what of all those ’90s bands that had a great song and so we bought 3–4 albums and some 7-inches by them hoping in vain that they’d replicate the success? RTH Labs now invites our readers to stand up, state your name, and join the conversation in a show of healing and in a concerted effort to  move onward past the doldrums of self-inflicted record collection melancholy.
