Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

My Sunday-themed episode of SNSI was already in the chute and ready to go before the events of last Monday afternoon. In the aftermath, I decided to postpone that episode in favor of a tribute to the great city of Boston. As the week went by, I questioned whether to go ahead with the Boston episode in case there were those still affected by the events or those that might be overwhelmed with the deluge of constant media updates. With the city and surrounding areas still healing I thought that the tribute episode might be “too soon.”

So, I’ve decided to return to my Sunday-themed episode and graft the tribute to the end of that episode. So if you wish not to listen to the Boston episode simply stop the show after the RTH “bumper” following the Etta James song. I chose not to talk and simply play some great songs. The Boston episode is by no means complete or definitive and should not be taken as such. It draws heavily on songs and bands that are familiar.

It isn’t unusual to make some personal connection when tragedies like this happen. Perhaps you have lived in Boston, or walked down some of the streets where the bombings took place. Maybe you know someone who was there on Monday. For me it wasn’t simply that I am a marathon runner, but rather that my wife is always waiting for me at the finish line. I’m even more determined in the future to one day cross that finish line in Boston and see her waiting there.

Life is fragile, but our common resolve to make this world worth living will forever be strong.

For this mix, I really didn’t feel like speaking over the tracks, or putting down bed music in order to list songs with my tinny laptop microphone. I’ll let the list below suffice, and happy listening!

Spring comes in many forms. Sometimes as a day in March, perhaps it’s Easter or maybe it’s a robin in the backyard. I’m sure that a majority of those who frequent the Hall equate Opening Day as the true sign that spring has sprung. The weather has little to do with it. I’ve seen a snow around these parts on Opening Day. At least we know that warmer days are ahead. And despite what Sports Illustrated will have you believe any team has a shot at October glory. So enjoy the season…

Townsman Slim Jade is back with another edition of Saturday Night Shut-In for your listening and discussing pleasure. Isn’t it time we listen to the music, then compare notes? I think so.

Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

I’ve always been into theme shows. I wrestled with many convoluted ideas and settled on a tribute to my favorite night of the week. And it’s partly for selfish reasons as well. I look forward to listening to SNSI during my Sunday morning runs or in some cases a late Saturday night run. Certainly, I’m more than capable of coming up with a playlist.

So, it’s a zippy 30 minutes long. It’s my first experience putting something like this together. So, consider this dipping my toes in the water.

Who knows, maybe this is the way to go for all future episodes. You tell us. Thank you, Slim, who asks us to excuse his computer’s built-in mic, for taking matters into your own hands and kicking ass. May others follow your lead. Enjoy!

I succumbed to the lure of a photo. A friend posted a photo of the bright pink Crosley Portable Turntable (with built-in speakers) that was offered through his store, and I decided it was time to get off my duff, take the bull by the horns and all those other anti-procrastion messages, and get me and Mr. Royale a record player. I didn’t order a pink one but instead, a respectable mellow blue one.

So yesterday morning, Mr. Royale opened the parcel and his eyes lit up. We both started to do the Hustle, the Madison, the Electric Slide, and the Pony around the room realizing the joys that were in store.

Today we gave our new little turntable a spin. We started with my K-Tel Super Bad album. Not only was it wondrous to listen to the crackles and pops of Isaac Hayes’ “Theme From Shaft” but the nostalgia of the whole playing records process was overwhelming. Honestly, I haven’t touched a record player in at least 15 years, so it was a surprise to me to remember that weight of the tone arm, the process of aligning the tracks, the dialing up and down of the volume knob. It’s a hardcore drug.

Sure the sound is not the greatest: it’s tinny and I could use much more volume. The records that I have here at home, which I toted from one end of the US to another, could use cleaning. But I’m already dreaming. I’m thinking of all my vinyl, still in storage at my parents’ home just down the road from here. It’s time to give a new listen to Live At Budokan, Fly Like An Eagle, Nursery Crimes, True Colors, Yes Songs, I Remember Tommy, and the assorted cut-outs that I picked up when I worked at a Scottsdale record store in the early ’80s.

I’m already thinking of some better speakers, some good record cleaner, and which records I want to listen to next.

The thought of this brings me immense joy.
