Greetings, fans of music that the world inexplicably wants to throw away! Today, I bring you a lovely bit of English psychedelia from the improbably named Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, entitled “The Sun Goes Down.” I have little to share with you about this band, other than the fact that they were not necessarily known as a “psychedelic” band per se — they were more famous for pop hits on the UK charts, such as… such as… hell I don’t know, and don’t care to find out.
But here they are in full, acid-drenched flower, sounding even more like the Dukes Of Stratosphear than the Dukes did… or something. I hope you enjoy this track as much as I did after finding it in the possession of a 70 year-old woman in rural Maryland, who had no use for it. It calls to mind a question, however: for those of you who ever indulged in the use of psychedelic substances — did you have a preferred soundtrack to your visits to the Land Of Little Horses? For those of you (like me) who were always too chicken to indulge: did you ever think there might be a piece of music that would provide a suitable soundtrack? Please share — we’re all friends here; let’s mellow out together.
I look forward to your responses.
HVB
… and for those of you who have a problem with “bull fighter music” — check Dave Dee & Co. out here:

Coming out of car radio, The Sun Goes Down might sound at least interesting. In my headphones it’s kind of nausea-inducing.
Electric Ladyland was the soundtrack for my first pot experience. Hendrix’s music is a pretty reliable drug substitute on its own.
I discovered the hard way that when you take too much acid dub is the devil’s music and must be avoided. Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians on the other hand got me through a very disturbing afternoon.
I can’t think of any music that would prevent me from becoming a paranoid lunatic if I were ever dosed, but I can say that townsman kcills, who swore up and down I ought to try things at least *once*, decided the album I ought to listen to while tripping was “Black Sea” by XTC. Which I think is a *terrible* choice! Now, “Mummer,” maybe I could get to that…
I love this. Sadly anything else I could dig up by them was sub-Monkees crud.
I think Beaky is gear.
No preferred soundtrack but spent an evening listening to only the left channel of the White Album. The right speaker blew out and we took it as a sign.
spectacular! i was expecting it to sound like the psychedelic four seasons album.
WoW! What a great find. I’d always wondered about these guys. It’s in a similiar vein to that Pisces re-issue I jus’ got.
As for mind expanding musik, jus’ about anything worked in our house back in those daze. Captain Beefheart was always fun to put on for the uninitiated — had the tendency to really freak folks out.
This song was great, HVB. Thanks! eh, I love that Four Seasons album, but it’s sure not this type of “psychedelia.”
I never had a go-to playlist, but the greatest memories I have of such listening experiences involve hanging with the Fingeroff brothers and spinning XTC’s Mummer followed by Pere Ubu’s Dub Housing. Of course, I could play those albums back-to-back right now and still get a thrill from them.
Yeah, to those who think Dave Dee and Co. are some great untapped mine of psych greatness… sorry. Everything else I’ve found by them pretty much sucks.
Ummagumma. Not the live platter, the DRUG platter. Several Species, The Narrow Way etc. Love it!
one time we got boomboxes and put on Paul’s Boutique on both of them a few seconds apart. by the 3rd song we were all screaming at the top of our lungs.
Mercury Rev has a song where the guy says “it’s Cold OUtside” that fraked us out really well.
More & Obscured By Clouds are really nice to come down to.
Spiritualized is more about pharmecudicals, but goes nicely with Acid & Mushrooms.
David Bowie of any kind is awful in these states.
Extasy makes house music make sense, if it never made sense to you before.
Worse than Bowie’s music is being stuck in a room at a frat house at Gettysburg College (right near the legendary Land of Little Horses) in which the central decoration is a huge, poorly painted version of the Changesone Bowie greatest hits album cover, as painted by our host.
Yeah, I didn’t mean to bag on Imitation Genuine Life (or whatever), just that you know, I’m just fine with there being only one instance of it. It’s just this side of the line.
Let’s see, on the head music thing, I’m gonna say middle Pink Floyd for us in the mid/late 80s.
