A simple enough question, I believe: What genre do you most prefer relative to the original, “authentic” form when done by “inauthentic” musicians?
In your heart of hearts, for instance, relative to authentic reggae, would you rather listen to The Clash play “Police and Thieves” and their other reggae covers?
Can you take or leave authentic Chicago blues, yet you seek out any early Fleetwood Mac album involving Peter Green?
Is your country music collection primarily made up of albums by bearded Columbia University graduates living in Brooklyn?
Is your interest in rock ‘n roll so weak that you prefer hearing it handled by the French?
Something else? Do tell!
I think I prefer to hear “raga rock” like Paint It Black, See My Friends, etc. over Ravi Shankar
Camper Van Beethoven’s Eastern European folk instrumentals.
In general, I hate to hear rock guys try to play the blue but I like to hear them try to play country.
They usually don’t get either types of music right but the attempts at country can sound like an entertaining mess while the blues stuff just sounds lame.
And I do love Cod Reggae.
I think I almost always like the way rock musicians play blues or country better than “real” country and blues artists. For some reason I tend to like the way the rock filer works. For the country style, I like when the band was a bunch of people in punk bands, because then when they play fast it sounds punk instead of country. I really like rock bands playing blues because it’s generally a little faster and when they write their own lyrics for the songs they’re a little more to my liking.
I like reggae in small doses by anyone. Three songs in a row and I’m out.
Fairport Convention’s version of British folk.
Does ska count as a subset of English punks playing reggae? If so that’s where I would vote (and did).
At first I thought I was immune to this preference, and I felt so superior. Certainly I like my blues, country, and reggae straight no chaser. Then I realized that it would never occur to me to listen to Jay Z or somebody like that, but I like alternative rap stuff like anticon, Prefuse 73, and early Beck.
