One’s go-to Valentine’s Day song on a particular Valentine’s Day is subject to change. I’ve been humming “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” the last few days. I’ve always loved that song. I love how everything seems suspended while the arrangement slowly crescendos. Love can feel that way. Very romantic, if you ask this typically not romantic guy.
Yesterday my wife and I had an excellent lunch at Del Posto in New York. As we sat down and the waitstaff fussed with our napkins and water glasses the piano player played “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” Nice!
OK, I’ll bite, as I await my wife to bring home some takeout and the boy is playing superhero action figures . . .
I know Clapton is not a big favorite around here, but I have always liked this song, because it reflects the mundane . . . “Late in the evening, wonder what clothes to wear . . . give her the car keys . . . ” etc.

My comment reminds of a letter that someone wrote to the music rag CMJ in the 90s . . “Is it wrong to like Toad The Wet Sprocket?” . . . Editors reply; “If you have to ask . ..’
Made Italian for Mrs LD and her visiting older sister and 20something niece. Next I know they’re drinking wine and smoking cigarettes and watching “The Making of ‘Rumours’.” My 3yr old son and I were relegated to the kitchen, but he was engrossed in Il Volo videos on his iPad. All I got are my magazines to catch up reading. But I tell ya what: if “The Making of ‘Blood On The Tracks’ or ‘Shoot Out The Lights’ make an appearance, I’m sleeping outside and declaring this the Valentine’s Song ’13:

I was out Valentining last night, so I didn’t get to this. My favorite Valentine’s song is The Flamingoes – I Only Have Eyes for You. That’s good stuff, there.
