Hey, here’s a clue for everyone playing: #4 and #13 ARE THE SAME HAND! Guess I got myself confused while sorting through and cropping my collected images.
Man, I can totally see why Mrs CDM thought #9 was Jim Morrison! I can imagine his head thrown back as he belts out “Touch Me.” Still wrong, but good imagination!
Numbers 1, 7, 9, 12, 14, and 16 are left on the board. I may crash in a few minutes, but I suspect #7 will be left on the board when I arise. Good luck!
I forgot about that one. I was trying to think if there was another middle finger beside Johnny Cash’s. I did notice, however, a couple of Ramones photos in which Johnny (and Joey, too, in one) has his thumb hooked into his pocket with his forefinger pointed at his bulge. Was that intentional?
BTW, I was going to use Prince’s right hand from Lovesexy, but I couldn’t find a big enough image. There wasn’t much contrast in the little image I had. As a result, I also had to scrap the hands of Jeff Lynne and Billy Gibbons. There is, however, an unidentified hand that I thought either you or BigSteve would get – and no one else…
SWEET on both counts, delmore! Nice debut in the Halls of Rock. Welcome to the show.
Now all the hands that are left to identify are #7, from an album cover band shot; #12, also from an album cover; and #14, an in-concert shot with the hand depicting much about the singer’s approach to music and life.
No fedora, Geils member, or Dylan tie-in was involved in the making of this album cover detail. If you could pull back, however, you would see an object that is associated with J Geils!
Wow, now that’s impressive. You put Pete’s internet research skills to shame, HVB.
This leaves us with #14 (someone who is “crazy” and…grabs life by the stones, as it were?) and #7 (personally bugging me, since I’ve been called out as someone who should be able to get this), right?
I didn’t mean to suggest that #14 was crazy, necessarily, but that he’s been driven crazy. And yes, for some reason, I think you and Oats are most likely to identify #7. mockcarr is another Townsperson I can see knowing this one, or kicking himself if someone else gets it first.
Grandiose and operatic in ambition, Spector’s a good guess, but this guy was out front, actually leading the band and directly receiving the love and admiration of the masses.
BTW, major guitar nerd kudos for recognizing that J. Geils was frequently seen playing a Flying V — which I always thought was a weird choice for a band like the JGB.
Yes, add that to the list of Musicians Playing Unexpected Gear. I think you mentioned the oddity of Fogerty playing a Rick last week. Possibly a future thread?
Mod, before you do a big reveal on #7, can you find another picture that features that bracelet? I swear I recognize it as a semi-iconic piece of rock jewelry. Am I wrong about that?
Let’s get the easy ones out of the way
1. This one is so easy it stumped me.
2. Tommy and Joey from The Ramones first album
3. John, George and Paul from Hey Jude album.
You’ve got #2 and 3!
#8 Otis Redding from the album Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix at Monterey
#10 – The album is Please To Meet Me, and I’m guessing it’s Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson.
I’ll let other townspeople chime in.
#15 is from the front cover of the first Roxy Music album.

You’ve got the right man for #8, wrong album cover; it’s from the Sitting on the Dock of the Bay cover – although it does look like the same suit.
#10 is correct – right cover, at least. I have no idea whose hands they are.
Can cliff sovinsanity run the table?
Indeed!
#11 is Tom Verlaine’s hand from the cover of Marquee moon.
Isn’t #5 Bowie? I can’t place the album cover.
Is 7 Nick Cave?
Is 16 Jagger?
Yes!
No.
Great guess for #7, but incorrect. That may be the hardest hand to guess.
#16 is not Jagger. If I were playing I would hope that I would guess that one. It’s a most-distinctive hand gesture for this artist.
#6 Patti Smith from the album Easter
Yes.
Hey, here’s a clue for everyone playing: #4 and #13 ARE THE SAME HAND! Guess I got myself confused while sorting through and cropping my collected images.
Aha! I was thinking that #5 looked like Bowie from ChangesOneBowie or a poster of that era. But that’s what #4 and #13 are!

Mrs CDM says #7 is Van Morrison and # 9 is Jim Morrison.
BINGO!
Mrs CDM is commended for playing, but she is wrong. #9, however, is the hand of a rock ‘n roll sex symbol gone to seed.
If anyone gets #7 it will be someone like Oats or alexmagic, or someone else… HINT: This shot is from an album cover.
Man, I can totally see why Mrs CDM thought #9 was Jim Morrison! I can imagine his head thrown back as he belts out “Touch Me.” Still wrong, but good imagination!
#5 is Brian Peter George St. John Le Baptiste de la Salle Eno
Got it!
Numbers 1, 7, 9, 12, 14, and 16 are left on the board. I may crash in a few minutes, but I suspect #7 will be left on the board when I arise. Good luck!
Disappointed that you didn’t use Moby Grape’s Don Stevenson from their first album:
http://therisingstorm.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/mobygrape.jpg
Great move, way ahead of his time.
Come ON — 16 is Bobby Plant! DoesnanybodyrememberLAUGHTER?
15 is –of course–Prince from the cover of Lovesexy.
Is 9 Jim Morrison?
THANK YOU! You’ve not only nailed the hand but the exact moment at when Plant would flash that gesture.
No, that was already guessed correctly – the woman from the cover of the first Roxy Music album.
Likewise, someone else made that same incorrect guess. It’s another bloated rock icon, one more bloated and more iconic.
9: Van Morrison
7: Robbie Robertson?
#9 is no Morrison whatsoever. He’s not even Morrissey.
#7 is not Robbie. He’s a long-tenured member of a band that dates back to our high school days, HVB.
#1 Springsteen
#9 Presley
?
SWEET on both counts, delmore! Nice debut in the Halls of Rock. Welcome to the show.
Now all the hands that are left to identify are #7, from an album cover band shot; #12, also from an album cover; and #14, an in-concert shot with the hand depicting much about the singer’s approach to music and life.
Yeah 14 is driving me crazy.
12 is the one that’s driving me nuts. I think I see a mid-70’s fedora in there. Someone in J Geils or Dylan?
No fedora, Geils member, or Dylan tie-in was involved in the making of this album cover detail. If you could pull back, however, you would see an object that is associated with J Geils!
Would #12 be Keith Richards?
Hmmm… than only mean a harmonica or cocaine…. But which one…
You’re ruling out some kind of magic dick.
No, but it is a guitar slinger, songwriter, and occasional lead vocalist of his magnitude!
The hand in question requests that we “not go there.”
Identifying #14, on the other hand, is not what drove #14 crazy.
Is #12 Pete Townsend, from the “All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes” LP cover?
Wow, now that’s impressive. You put Pete’s internet research skills to shame, HVB.
This leaves us with #14 (someone who is “crazy” and…grabs life by the stones, as it were?) and #7 (personally bugging me, since I’ve been called out as someone who should be able to get this), right?
Yes, I thought you’d be all over that one, HVB.
I didn’t mean to suggest that #14 was crazy, necessarily, but that he’s been driven crazy. And yes, for some reason, I think you and Oats are most likely to identify #7. mockcarr is another Townsperson I can see knowing this one, or kicking himself if someone else gets it first.
If no one gets it by this evening I’ll reveal the identity of the grandiose hand of #14.
BTW, it was the Flying V Townshend is holding on that album cover that could be related to J Geils himself. Wasn’t that his main guitar?
Is #14 Phil Spector?
Grandiose and operatic in ambition, Spector’s a good guess, but this guy was out front, actually leading the band and directly receiving the love and admiration of the masses.
CLUE FOR #7: If you could see either hand of one of this musician’s bandmates there’s a good chance you would catch a sight of black lace.
#7: Freddie Mercury
#14 is Freddie, not #7.
#7 is Martin Chambers of the Pretenders, right?
Correct!
Yes, from Pretenders II!
Mod, before you do a big reveal on #7, can you find another picture that features that bracelet? I swear I recognize it as a semi-iconic piece of rock jewelry. Am I wrong about that?
Oh. Never mind. But I do now realize where I know that bracelet from!
Hilarious! That CD arrived in my mailbox today and is still importing into my computer now, as I re-open this thread and see this….
Have we revealed #1 because it’s driving me mad. I have this one somewhere in the archives.
Yes, a first-timer, delmore, got it: it’s Springsteen looking over his shoulder from the driver’s side of some vintage convertible car.
